HAY FEVER INJECTIONS

Do you suffer with severe hay fever symptoms that are affecting your everyday life? Evesham Aesthetics Clinic is pleased to offer Kenalog injections for the treatment of severe hay fever symptoms. Unlike over-the-counter allergy tablets, Kenalog injections offer long-term relief of symptoms such as sneezing, a runny nose, irritated eyes and more.

WHAT IS IT AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

Each Kenalog injection contains Triamcinolone acetonide 40mg/1ml as the active ingredient. Triamcinolone acetonide belongs to a group of medicines called corticosteroids (steroids). The principal effect of corticosteroids is to reduce the body’s inflammatory & allergic response and they are used very commonly for many serious medical conditions. A Kenalog injection does not cure hay fever, it just temporarily suppresses the immune system enough to take away the symptoms in most people who need it.

HOW LONG DO THE EFFECTS LAST?

Many people find the relief from symptoms can last the entire season (around three months). In exceptional circumstances, a second dose of Kenalog may be required in the same season.

IS IT PAINFUL?

During the treatment, Kenalog is injected into the buttock (gluteal) muscle. This is known as a deep Intra-Muscular (IM) injection. The skin surface is thoroughly cleaned with an alcohol swab prior to the injection. It takes a few seconds and is not a very painful injection as the substance itself is not irritating to the tissue.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

Kenalog injections, like all steroids, can cause unwanted side-effects, although these are rare at the dose levels that you get from a Kenalog injection. The unique issue with a Kenalog injection that differentiates it from oral steroids is that once the injection is administered, the side effects may last for at least 3 weeks.

Possible side effects include:

  • Pain and skin colour changes (hypopigmentation) at site of injection

  • Sterile abscess at site of injection

  • Dimpling of skin caused by loss of fat under the skin at injection site

  • Skin itching, redness, or a rash

  • Sticky black stools

  • Severe abdominal pain

  • Vomiting blood

  • Mood changes

  • Anaphylactic allergic reactions

  • Little or no response to COVID-19 or other vaccinations as a direct result of immunosuppression caused by Kenalog. It is therefore advised that Kenalog is NOT administered 4 weeks either side of any vaccination.
