ipl skin treatments

what is ipl?

IPL (Intensive Pulse Light) is a light based therapy using specific wavelengths of light that work by targeting different structures within the skin such as melanin, blood and the water contained in collagen.

The light pulses also stimulate collagen production which floods to the treatment area, plumping the skin, reducing wrinkles and resulting in a more youthful appearance.

what skin problems can be helped?

Using these wavelengths of light, a course of IPL treatments can have a dramatic effect on a number of skin conditions including rosacea, pigmentation, acne, small broken blood vessels, fine lines and wrinkles.

does it hurt?

Most IPL treatments are well tolerated with minimal discomfort. Some patients report a feeling of being 'pinged' with an elastic band but is not excessively painful.

treating acne with ipl

During an acne treatment the IPL system releases yellow, green and red light that is emitted in a series of short pulses. The yellow and green lights destroy the bacteria that live in and on the skin and cause inflammation, while the red light directly targets the overactive sebaceous glands that block pores and cause outbreaks of pustules. The light also stimulates collagen production in the area helping to improve the appearance of acne scarring.

how many treatments will I need?

A course of 3-4 treatments at 2-3 week intervals is recommended with maintenance treatments as needed.

treating pigmentation with ipl

Photorejuvenation is the broad term used to describe the treatment of photo-aging which includes wrinkles, pigmentation and age spots. IPL treatments encourage the skin to repair itself and produce new cells and increase its collagen production.

It is a very effective and non-invasive form of treatment that requires no downtime. A course IPL photorejuvenation treatments can not only improve the appearance of pigmentation and sun damage but will also improve skin tone and reduce wrinkles.

treating vascular lesions

Thread veins are often seen on the face, especially the cheeks and nose. They can be caused by excessive exposure to UV radiation but some people are simply more susceptible to them and they can be present from childhood.

IPL therapy treats thread veins by emitting wavelengths of light that are filtered to target the haemoglobin in the thread veins/broken capillaries. The treatment causes the vein to gradually break down over a number of days until it has disappeared. Facial telangiectasias, Campbell de Morgan spots, broken capillaries and rosacea conditions usually respond well with IPL treatments.
